Sawan Teej Festival, Jaipur

  • Teej is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Rajasthan on the third day of the Sawan month of the Hindu calendar. It commemorates the union of Goddess Parvati with Lord Shiva. On this day, the women pray for marital bliss and the well-being of their husband and children. It is a festival celebrated by women, who dress up in jewel green skirts and perform the Rajasthani folk dances. They sway on swings decorated with flowers while singing traditional Teej songs. Women and girls in their best clothes and jewelry gather at a nearby place or temple to pray to Goddess Parvati. During this festival, the markets in Jaipur display extensive collections of clothes and accessories for women- most of the clothes are in the laheria or the traditional tie and dye style that Rajasthan is famous for. Sweetshops display a tempting array of sweets, the most popular being Feeni and Ghevar.
